Kevin Costner Reveals the Biggest Life Lesson He Has Learned as a Father to 7 Children

Hollywood legend Kevin Costner may be best known for his iconic roles on screen, but off-screen, his most cherished role is being a father. With seven children ranging in age, Costner has experienced the full spectrum of parenthood—from late-night feedings to high school graduations. In a recent interview, the actor opened up about the biggest life lesson he’s learned as a dad: “You can’t be perfect, but you can always be present.”

Costner shared that juggling a busy career with family life hasn’t always been easy, but he’s learned that the most meaningful moments come from simply being there. “You might miss a game or a recital once in a while,” he said, “but showing up consistently—emotionally and physically—teaches your kids they matter.”

The Yellowstone star also emphasized the importance of listening. “Children want to be heard, not just guided,” he explained. “Each of my kids is different, and being a good father means respecting those differences while giving them the love and support they need.”

Now in his late 60s, Costner reflects on fatherhood as his greatest adventure. “No movie, no award, no headline can match the feeling of being called ‘Dad,’” he said with a smile. “It’s humbling, it’s challenging, and it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”
